2010 is proving to be a very significant year in the M2M space. Globally Mobile Networks are recognising the huge potential that this sector of wireless communications technology is bringing, with analysts extolling the virtues of exciting revenue models.

Latest figures quote M2M connections reaching 200 million globally by 2014 with a total market valuation of approximately $20 billion. Recently, large wireless operators in the U.S. witnessed a significant boost in M2M connections; at the end of the first quarter 2010, Verizon Wireless enabled 7.3 million M2M connections, while AT&T enabled 5.78 million M2M connections.

“As with all emerging markets, we should take the lead from the USA” comments Philip Cole, Sales and Marketing Director for Wireless Logic. “What happens there will always happen here, and then onwards across the channel – the growth figures are in line with our expectations.”

However, Philip also notes a tone of caution: “M2M should not be seen as a market ready for commoditisation – the model, whilst attractive, is a million miles away from the mobile telephony market. Wireless Logic’s growing client base is demanding more ‘added value’ services, tailored to individual solutions. It is to this area, where an independent aggregator such as us comes into its own.”

This year is seeing unprecedented growth for the organisation with an exceptional opportunity pipeline across a number of vertical markets. “Every day brings new applications as the technology becomes a mainstream carrier for data,” concludes Philip Cole. “Our business development teams are working closely with sectors that, just a year ago, did not even recognise M2M as part of their communication infrastructure. We are in exciting times.”
